Research shows: no contaminations during flights

August 28, 2020

A recent Dutch study has shown that so far no one has been contaminated in-flight. The source and contact investigations of the Dutch GGD (Municipal Health Service), which is in charge of contact tracing in new Covid-19 cases across the Netherlands, have revealed that so far no one in the Netherlands has been infected with the Covid-19 virus in an airplane.

Last week, Dutch Minister of Public Health Hugo de Jonge & Dutch Minister of Infrastructure Cora van Nieuwenhuizen wrote this in a letter to the Dutch Lower House. “Those Dutch citizens who tested positive upon their arrival in Holland did not infect any other passengers on their flight”, the letter reveals.

The letter consisted of answers to questions posed by the Lower House after several people turned out to be infected with the virus upon their arrival in June and July. Therefore it is an absolute certainty those passengers were not infected on board the plane and no other passengers were infected.

Face masks are compulsory on passenger planes worldwide. Moreover, HEPA filters continually filter out 99.9% of all viruses from the air. Homebound passengers at the Dutch national airport can also get tested there. The Dutch government concludes that there are no reasons to tighten up the security measures for air travel. (@Nu.nl)
