Is this the breakthrough of the workation?
August 20, 2020
The term workation was coined several years ago and is a combination of ‘work’ and ‘vacation’. The idea is to travel to a fun or exotic holiday destination where you work by day and sample the vacation atmosphere in the evening and on weekends.
Back in the day this was a privilege mainly reserved for those who didn’t work from an office and could easily do their job from the nearest Starbucks as long as the Wi-Fi connection worked. Just think of freelancers, journalists, consultants, programmers, designers, ... For many others this remained an unrealistic dream because they were expected at the office every single day.
But now Covid-19 has changed all that. Many more people than before have been introduced to the concept of homeworking (out of necessity). Many companies have decided to cater to this new way of working, resulting in increased productivity.
The taboo on working from home is starting to crumble. The next step? Workation! Let’s be honest: What is the difference between working from your kitchen or from your balcony on a Spanish Costa? That is, apart from the sea air, the beach, the relaxed atmosphere, the tapas and the Sangria at the end of your working day...
3 crucial tips for a successful workation:
Make sure you have access to a good and stable Wi-Fi connection (check in advance with the accommodation).
Maintain the same work discipline as at home because you want to keep your boss happy after all.
Put that laptop aside and don’t think about work in your spare time!
PS. Workations are also a lot of fun as a team!
